Nuwat at the UN Ocean Conference 2025

Jun 15, 2025

Nice, France

In June 2025, Nuwat had the honour of representing Bahrain at the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France. This global gathering brought together policymakers, scientists, and advocates with one mission: safeguarding the future of our oceans.

For us at Nuwat, it was more than just a conference — it was a chance to bring the voice of the Arabian Gulf, the hottest sea on the planet, into global climate and conservation dialogues. From the plenary halls to ship decks, we shared why rewilding our seas and restoring ecosystems isn’t just possible, but essential.

Highlights from our journey:

  • Representing Gulf scientists as panelists at the MENA Policy Transformative Leadership Roundtable organised by Goumbook, where we shared the significance and power of locally led science in shaping inclusive marine policies across the region.
  • The importance of championing animal welfare and the moral imperative of healthy oceans.
  • Strengthening global partnerships with initiatives like Fundación Rewilding Chile, the MENA Oceans Network, and BNP Paribas’ Ocean Program.
  • Engaging with Bahrain’s Ambassador to France H.E. Essam Aljassim as we explored the potential of launching a marine science summer program for Bahraini youth.
  • Meeting ocean legends like Captain Paul Watson and connecting with inspiring ocean advocates worldwide.

What’s next?

We’re scaling up our seagrass and blue carbon research, building pathways for Bahraini youth in marine science, and deepening our regional and global partnerships. UNOC3 reminded us that big change happens when science, policy, and community come together — and Nuwat is proud to carry Bahrain’s voice forward in this global movement for ocean resilience.

Stay tuned, follow our updates, and join us on this journey — because the ocean’s future is our future.
