Waves of Sound Calling Coral – A First Step Towards Acoustic Coral Restoration

Bahrain
At Nuwat, empowering the next generation of environmental stewards is at the heart of what we do. Throughout the period of December 2024 to April 2025, we have had the privilege of mentoring and supporting Alexa Dumalogdog, a highschool student at Bahrain Middle High School (DODEA) on her innovative research project, “Waves of Sound Calling Coral.” This project explores the potential of using acoustic enrichment to encourage coral settlement—a pioneering effort in Bahrain’s marine conservation landscape.
In February 2025, the research team took Alexa out to Fasht Al Jarim to deploy the sound system, designed to mimic natural reef soundscapes and attract coral larvae. The device was retrieved in March (four weeks post deployment); although the experiment was short and not expected to yield definitive results, it marked a significant first attempt. Interestingly, the device itself was missing from the site—possibly carried away by strong currents or picked up by someone. However, the main block and marker to which the device was attached were successfully retrieved. While no coral recruits were found on the marker, early signs of marine growth were evident—a promising indicator of future potential.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Directorate of Fisheries at the Supreme Council for Environment for supporting this project by issuing a research permit that enabled the field work aspect of the project in line with national laws. Their support was instrumental in making this research possible.
Alexa is now busy writing up her research project report, and we are so excited to read her final piece! This project reflects the spirit of exploration and resilience, and we couldn’t be prouder of Alexa’s dedication and hard work. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting journey toward innovative coral restoration!
I would like to take a moment to thank Nuwat for the incredible support during my coral reef project in Bahrain’s unique waters. I hope this study will bring more opportunities and interest to this topic. Thank you for believing in me and I’m grateful for this once in a life time opportunity.
