Introducing Harvesting Wisdom: A Journey into Bahrain’s Farms

Bahrain
We are excited to announce the launch of Harvesting Wisdom, a unique programme designed by Nuwat to connect the people of Bahrain with its farming roots. Partnering with local farms, including Juma Bees Farm and Al Jasra Organic Farm, the course aims to provide an immersive experience whereby participants gain insights that blend ancestral, conventional and organic farming practices.
During the debut session, participants started the day with an introduction to traditional farming at Juma Bees Farm, learning about the agricultural practices practised on the farm and their impact on soil health and biodiversity. But the real magic happened when participants entered the world of pollinators that were on the farm – the bees, butterflies, and birds that play an essential role in our food systems. A visit to the beehive gave participants a chance to get up close and personal with these tiny but mighty creatures, learning how they help sustain crops and tasting the farm’s locally made delicious natural honey.
After the buzzing excitement, the group visited Al Jasra Organic Farm, where they delved into organic farming practices rooted in ancestral knowledge. The tour focused on soil health, crop rotation, and natural pest control, giving participants hands-on experience as they tasted and sampled the local produce they encountered on the farm, some of which they got to take home.
Throughout the day, participants had the opportunity to engage with the farmers directly. Conversations with farmers opened doors to discussions about the challenges they face, including land conversion and the gap between supportive national policies and the on-the-ground realities they face.
By the end of the day, Harvesting Wisdom had accomplished its mission: to inspire and educate the next generation of advocates for sustainable agriculture. With hands-on learning, insightful conversations, and a genuine connection to local farmers, participants left with fresh produce in hand and a wealth of knowledge about the role each of us plays in supporting a more sustainable future.
